Dr. Annie George is a distinguished Malaysian researcher with over two decades of experience in natural product research, particularly focusing on herbal medicine.  Since joining Biotropics Malaysia Berhad in 2007, she has led the research and development of plant-based products, managing 12 clinical trials targeting areas such as men's and women's health, diabetes, cognition, weight management, immune function, and liver health. 

Research Contributions and Publications

Dr. George has authored 31 publications, accumulating over 20,000 reads and 657 citations.  Her research has been published in reputable international journals, including BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies.  Notable studies include:

 

Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali): Investigated its effects on stress hormones, mood, and testosterone levels, demonstrating benefits in stress reduction and hormonal balance. 

 

Persicaria minor (BioKesum®): Conducted a six-month randomized, placebo-controlled trial showing improvements in memory and mood among older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

Patents and Innovations

Dr. George is a co-inventor on 11 patents related to natural products.  Notably, she contributed to the development of a standardized extract of Eurycoma longifolia (Physta®), which has demonstrated immune-enhancing and anti-viral properties.   Additionally, her work on Polygonum minus has led to innovations in memory enhancement supplements. 

Recognition and Impact

Under Dr. George's leadership, Biotropics Malaysia's Nu-Femme® received the Women's Health Award at the Functional Food For Wellness Summit 2025, highlighting its excellence in promoting women's health.   Her contributions have significantly advanced the global recognition of Malaysian herbal products, ensuring they meet international standards for safety and efficacy.
